Cant Format 40gb HD!!

hey i have a 40GB HD(Maxtor) pulled from a HP computer and it has windows XP on it....so i pop it in my current computer and it recognizes and everything and i can access all the files(its shows up as D drive and when i go to formt it (right click on drive>format>OK) it pops up and tells me to close all things that may be using the drive...well i have i even went throgh my processes running and cleaned up up so all i had on my desktop was the format screen part....and it still wont let me do it.....does anyone know why? or what to do to get this formatted? any other way of formatting?

any insight would be great....THNX

Right click on the drive and click on manage. Then see what partitions are on it. I would erase them all and make a new NTFS partition.

ok i got into disk manegment and deleted it...but now the HD doesnt show up at all....not even under My Computer.....What Happened:S

control panel>administrative tools>management console>disk management
should be correct enough to get you there ;)

alright i found it again and think i got a new partition formatting its at %20....i think i should be on my way....thnx for all your help...ill be back if it doesnt work:p
