Can't force refresh rate on 900NF/Radeon

I got a Radeon now and it's REALLY TIGHT. Except at 1280x1024, it says 100hz in my info screen. Yeah that's cool but I checked out Samsung's website and 85hz is the max refresh rate at 1280x1024, not 100hz. So I don't want to be running at 100hz when 85hz the max since it will probably wreck the monitor. I changed it from optimal to 85hz in the adapter properties and then when I press the info button on monitor it says 85hz except in games like Half-life it still says 100hz (so I assume it is running at that). How do I get it to stay at 85hz so I don't wreck my monitor?

On a related note, why can't I get desktop resolutions above 1600x1200 in windows? My Radeon and 900NF support it and I just want to try it out.

Thanks.

Did you know that Windows 9x stores a different refresh rate for each color depth for each resolution?

What OS are you running?

This tool doesn't work on NT4/2000, but otherwise I would get it and set all your refresh rates for all color depths for all resolutions to start.

Download HZtool from this site: http://hem.spray.se/doxx/

As for the resolution...is your monitor set to PnP and detecting the 900NF correctly, or are you using the actual 900NF driver? If so and it doesn't give you the option of more than 1600x1200, there's one thing to try.

Set your monitor type to PnP monitor. Power off your system. Power off your monitor. Leave your monitor off and power on your system, wait a good while so it'll get all the way into windows. Power back on your monitor. Check your available resolutions, it should list every resolution your video card is capable, and may even list ones your monitor is supposedly incapable of...

Thanks for the link for that tool. I don't have time to try it tonight but I will tomorrow and judging by the screenshot and info it will work.

It is set to PnP in the monitor part of Displayer properties. I guess it was just "reinstalled" because after taking out my old video card it reset the monitor to unknown monitor and then automatically detected it and installed it after I booted-up. So I'm not using the Samsung drivers but it is correctly detected as a 900NF. I guess I'll try that powering down tomorrow.

I did check in Half-life though where it was saying 100hz even though I set it to 85hz that I'm not running 1280x1024 since there is no option for it. The number is something like 1280x956. Maybe in that case the monitor can support 100hz at the resolution... I'm not sure. Well anyway it was probably saying 100hz in 1280x1024 for the other games so thanks for the link to that proggie.

Well I reinstalled the newest inf profile from the Samsung webpage and still can't access resolutions past 1600x1200. This isn't really a concern, I just wanted to check out the higher ones.

I tried both HZtool and Radtweak and both say 85hz at 1280x1024. But still in windows now it says 100hz on the info screen even though the recommended timing says 1280x1024@85hz. Now wtf?? I don't want to be running 100hz all this time because it might wreck the monitor... any other ideas?

update: Now I press info again and it says 85hz. Well that's good except in games it goes to 100hz. And when I switch to 1600x1200, it goes to 60hz. This is messed up before it went to 85hz at 1600x1200, where is where it should be.

Your 900NF supports 1280x1024 at 100hz. My KDS av-195tf does and your samsung has a slightly more bandwidth than mine does. Don't worry about it.

Ok I checked the info screen again and never noticed the scroll arrows until now. It shows the maximum refresh rate at each resolution and it does in fact support 100hz since the max is 101hz. But still it doesn't show over 1600x1200 but like I said I don't plan to run at that resolution I just want to check it out so it's not much of a problem.

But now at 1280x1024, it is 60hz!! I didn't change it in RadTweak or HZTool it just is at 60hz and doesn't goto 85 or 100. And the screen size/position is weird now. Argh...must change soon...60hz give headache!

update again: After fiddling with it it FINALLY says 100hz at 1280x1024. Except now at ANY other resolution it goes to 60hz. This is pissing me off! Why can't it just go to the optimal like before? It's set to optimal!

UPDATE 2: Well it still is at 100hz in windows at 1280x1024 except in games like Midtown Mandess it shows 60hz when playing at 1280x1024. And like before, any other resolution in windows only does 60hz, even though it is set to Optimal. It might be the video card is not configured properly so I'm probably going to try those WHQL drivers anyway. Need any help.

SOrry for dragging this thread on but I keep getting these refresh rates problems.
