Can't fit heatsink onto SSE2 PIII with case removed

I recently purchased a used PIII450 for a dual setup, and to my surprise the CPUs case had been removed. The heatsink I had purchased for it uses a clip to hold itself onto the chip, and the heatsink is way too loose. as a temporary solution I have the heatsink tied to the CPU with twist ties, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution. I know many of you have removed the casing from your CPUs, so how did you get the heatsink to clip on?

Thanks.

I attached the retail HSF to a P3 500 with plastic zip ties pulled very tight. I had removed the black plastic case to expose the PCB holding the CPU and cache chips, and so I ran the ties through the holes in the PCB that had originally held the pins that held the case, PCB and HSF together.

Sir Fredrick,

Check out my old post on a similar subject.

My original post.

I cut up some black Papermate brand pens(they have a smaller internal diameter than the BiC) with a utility knife, the length you need is specific to your heatsink. I cut mine longer than I needed and shaved them to fit with a little extra tension. Worked great. Unfortunately that CPU is in my sister's computer and she is in another state so I can't get you a close up picture of the setup.

You can almost see them if you go here and look closely at the picture on the top left. The standoffs are between the back of the PCB and those two silver things. Also look at the second picture down on the right side. Too bad I didn't take those pictures closer.

I think you get the idea, the link in my old post has great close-ups.

Good luck

;)

EDIT:I forgot to add that I put those paper washers(like you used to get with motherboard mounting screw sets) between the standoffs and the back of the PCB.
