Hi.

Not even sure where this belongs, but pretty sure here, re W7.

1) Earlier, I learned I needed to send FAXes for the first time in I can't remember.

2) I got out my 5 PCI FAX modems from my FAX modem BIN.....all kinda old.

3) Tried the first 4, too old, Windows could not find compatible drivers.

4) Last one, a Motorola....worked---cause the last one of several being the only one that works.... is how life works:mad:. And I updated the drivers. Windows says card is lovely and working just fine. Thing shows up in Printers & faxes.

5) In Windows features, I have FAXing checked.

NOW, for the life of me, I can not find Windows Fax and Scan in this system!!! I enter it in search.....it does not appear.

I am disgusted and humiliated and can almost not believe this.:$

Please, can someone help?

Thank you.

and it came up, the GUI. :$

But why I hadda do that...why it din come up when I just used "Windows FAX & Scan'....I just do not know.o_O

When I can, I should run sfc to see if any of my system files are corrupt.

Do you have Windows Fax and Scan enabled under Print and Document Services in Windows Features?

I have heard of restarting the computer and running the program as Administrator helping in these situations.

K....let me try to organize this chronology.

1) I tried to ping the card again, and everything stopped responding and I could not close Device manager, or the underlying program which stopped responding: Microsoft management console, even using Task Manager.

2) I had to reboot.

3) I then thought maybe that I updated the driver of this thing was bad, so i uninstalled the thing and rebooted.

4) On boot, Windows installed the original driver.

5) But, when I again tried to ping the thing.....same deal as above, everything stopped responding.

6) I rebooted. Saw error message: 04/02/0 Error allocating I/O Bar for PCI Device....this before i as usual chose to boot into my main drive.

7) Tried all the same stuff again, same results.

8) Rebooted, ran Pre Boot system Assessment, the short one. Everything came up normal.

What do we think is wrong?o_O Is this this stupid MODEM? Do I have to get my old FAX MACHINE OUT OF THE CLOSET AND hook it up??????:(

Originally, I could ping the thing. Nothing froze, nothing stopped responding. Then, when the FAX setup could not contact the modem....I started FIDDLING. I should have waited for Ketchup79 to waste his life finding that fixit thing.:(

But that is not how I ROLL. I just DO STUFF.:(

Edit: WAY BACK.....when I was still running XP in my now backup desktop.....I installed a card and set up FAXing and it took 7 seconds. And I FAXED some stuff, and it was NORMAL.

Well......I think maybe it's this card, tho each time I uninstall it and reboot, it installs again. But I am still getting the freezings when I just right click on it in Device Mgr.

I just found this re Error allocating I/O Bar for PCI device:
Best AnswerVoter's Choice

This has been asked before: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...

Dell's documentation on the error seems to concur with the first answer there that one of the PCI devices is faulty. If it's an add-on card, it may just need to be taken out and put back in (a.k.a., reseating) to make sure there's a good, snug connection. A device may have indeed failed. There should have been a code preceding that message that indicates which device. Something like "0D\02\2." That should identify the bus & device, I believe.

The device manager may also be of use. Open it up and see if any of the devices are marked with an exclamation point or X-ed out. Those would be the likely culprits if there are any.

I just wasted hours I do not have to waste trying to figure this out and troubleshoot.

I guess I either have to get my old FAX machine down (Blech) or buy another card. I seems the five I had in my BIN.....not so hot. Despite this Motarola one seemed to work. For a hot minute.

I have a fax service which sends faxes to ppl by attaching images to email. They can be TIFs, JPGs, PDFs, etc. It costs about $40 a year, but I believe there are some out there with a free trial period. faxes are so last century, don't you think?

Check post #3. U can see I mainly agree. On the other hand, they who want the material FAXed.....have very good reasons. Nothing we send via email can ever be safe. NOTHING.

As I also said, I have old FAX machine stored at the top of a closet. But my way is to get things working as they are engineered to work. including FAXing in W7.

I am starting to think perhaps this card may not be compatible with 64-bit. But maybe that's not it. So far, I just do not know.

If U see above, the ERROR message I get before I choose which drive to boot into.....is SIGNIFICANT. Might well mean the card is bad even tho it doesn't appear so.

But I will get to the bottom of it....cause that's how I roll.

Well, nothing is perfectly secure, but the service I use, Faxpipe, takes reasonable steps to ensure secure transmission, and delivers the fax on the other end to their fax machine like nothing happened.

I understand being persistent and getting things to work, believe me. But in the meantime, you might want to fax some stuff! ;)

I heah U. But push comes to shove, I could get the FAX machine down and hook it up. I am still determined to get this to work, cause it is engineered to work.

Meanwhile, I just ran Driver Scanner and found this below. I will now get THIS driver and see if this puts this function right!;)

Sigh. I reseated the card, got the new drivers, even rebooted......same deal.

PCI error message no longer there when I power on or reboot.

I am exhausted from this silly struggle.

Well! When U have a bad day, you really do HAVE A BAD DAY! Calculate the odds against THIS, boys and girls:

After doing more compulsive fiddling.....even with the other modems (that PCI slot is EXHAUSTED)...I kinda gave up on getting FAXing to work with my current cards in W7 64-bit.

MOVING ALONG now to newly discovered Hardware mess in this mess:

I got my HP 1040 FAX machine down from where it was buried top of a closet. Still beautiful machine. Plugged it in, works fine.
HP1040Fax.png

But couldn't find my manual, so went to HP to download one.......and GUESS WHAT?

I find.......THIS!:
http://faxrecall.hpordercenter.com/US-en/

RECALLS (Jan 2012) FOR THIS PUPPY I haven't used for years! Why? Cause what it really is is some kinda IED! Not a FAX machine at all!!!!o_O

Thas right, since I stopped using it long ago, they discovered it just heats up and IGNITES and YOU and yr apartment can just BURST INTO FLAMES & immolate until you and everything around you are reduced to CINDERS AND DUST.

@thecoolnessrune, a working fax modem IS a requirement for what you propose, which is what this thread is mostly about.

Back to my original suggestion, then? :p
