Can't find proof of purchase for Windows 8

Sometime back in 2013 I bought Windows 8 (upgraded from Eval), that computer then died a few months later so I've had a disc with Win 8 and the product key sitting on it for a while.

I tried to install it on a SSD the other day and it said that the product key is bad. I have it recorded in two spots both the same way.

I can find no record of this in my email, I'm guessing it was June-ish that I bought it. Is there ANY other way to find the record of purchase for this? My CC records only go back about a year, I really don't know what to do. Am I pretty much just the proud owner of a $100 coaster?

I suspect that product key is an 'upgrade' product key. Thus not supporting an initial install. For a new or clean installation, you may first have to install a previous version (WinXP, WinVista, Win7, Win8 eval) that you can then 'upgrade' from.

Ah...got it, makes sense why it wouldn't work. Okay, thanks. 🙂
