I know there's something on my computer because I can't launch my firewall program (zonealarm suite) and it blocked me from installing MS security essentials and from running housecall (claimed the link was broken). also, the link to MSSE on MS's site was blocked (again claimed the link was broken). however, I've run several programs that have come up empty (avast, superantispyware, malware bytes anti-malware, spybot, spyware terminator). also, both superantispyware and malware bytes said the firewall was blocking updates. how do I clean this crap off my computer?

Make sure you boot into Safe Mode. Put Malwarebytes and the updated definitions on a thumb drive that you downloaded on a different PC. Then copy them over to your harddrive once you have booted up. Run the full scan then. By loading up into Safe Mode, you will hopefully prevent the malware from loading itself up and keep itself hidden from the antispyware software.

You can find the manual install for the updated definitions here:

Run Hijackthis and post the log here, or PM me it. I run it 4 times a day sometimes (fix PC's for a living) and have become real good at spotting crap. If you're comfortable doing it yourself Google Hijackthis Log Analyzer, it'll analyze the log Hijackthis gives you, it's not 100% but it does a pretty good job.

Yeah, while it is not as simple to figure out as some other software, HijackThis really does do an unbelievable good job of finding ANYTHING that starts when the computer does.

I would agree with booting into safe mode and running hijack this along with antimalware/antivirus software.

Perhaps you can also try this:

I have not tried it myself, but they have a portable antivirus you can install on a USB drive from another computer, and then use it to scan the infected machine. Perhaps others here can comment on portableapps?
