Can't find ide1 devices

My system, for some reason, wont see any ide1 devices. I've tried replacing the cd-rom with a different one. This happened before when I had a different system, and it magically started seeing the cd-rom drive a few days later. 😕 The only thing that I did before it stopped seeing it was plug a slave hard drive on ide0 for a few minutes to get some stuff off of it. I know it's a long shot but has anyone here dealt with something like this before?

First thing is to make sure the slave master selection on the new cd rom matches the old one and double check your cables to make sure you attached the device to the proper cable

Yeah, I did that.. The cd-rom drive was working perfectly until a while ago. It works fine as a slave on the primary ide but... who the hell would want to use it that way? :/

Anything else on the IDE1 cable? If not put the hdd with its IDE0 cable in the motherboard's IDE1 socket and see if it boots up. If not it might be the IDE1 cable or the MB controller or your bios is not set up to detect new hardware. I suspect it to be the cable

I've switched cables and I put the hd on ide1 (didn't see it). I bet it will start working in a few days. I just want to know why

What OS are you using?

The reason I ask is if you are using windows 9x (or ME) you can open regedit, search for entry "noide" and if that entry is found delete it (or change its value from 1 to 0. That entry turns off all IDE support except for basic hard drive commands.

What motherboard would this be, exactly? On some Intel-based boards, one of the regular IDE channels turns off in certain situations if you're using Serial ATA drives on the Intel southbridge SATA channels.

I just don't get it..I have the weirdest machine in the whole world. After moving the ide drives around, switching cables, etc.. I finally just take my machine and shake it around in the air. And it worked. 😕
