Can't find boot drive after restart/shutdown

I have a computer that will work fine, but will not find the boot drive after shutdown/restart sometimes. To fix the problem, I can unplug the sata cable and then plug it back into a different sata connection on the motherboard and it will work again. I'm going to change cables since it is easy to do and see if it makes a difference. I wanted to ask if anyone has seen this before? Would this be more likely to be a motherboard problem or maybe a hard drive problem?

Thanks for any help

without knowing the motherboard make, model and version, and bios revision, nor the make and model of HDD, it's hard to say.

The motherboard is a Abit AN8 skt 939 board. The HDD is a seagate 300GB 7200.8 I'll check for the bios revision when I get back home.

there's multiple versions of the AN8, that's the 1st hurdle, the bios revision will be the second thing I need. model of the HDD is also needed.

The OS is XP Pro. I'm out of town and still waiting for the guy that normally uses the computer to email me the info.

I have the system at home, I'm not. I'm depending on a room mate to email me the specs since I didn't have time to before I left. It is an old system of mine that he uses. I had access when I first posted. Sorry if that caused problems.
