Every time I deeply inhale, I can feel a sharp pain in the back of my right lung. It's almost like I'm stretching out some kind of muscle in my back or maybe it's my diaphragm? It somewhat feels like lactic acid buildup. I can lean back and inhale without any problem, but when I lean forward and inhale, it gets very uncomfortable... which kind of makes me thing that it is not a lung issue. Eh.. I'm really not sure.

I've had this injury before, and I'm not quite sure what it may be. I get it every now and then... and I want to say that it occurs quite a bit when I run a few miles when I haven't ran in awhile. This time, however, I didn't do any sudden aerobic activity, but I was doing some reverse situps for the first time to try and strengthen my lower back.

I'm not sure that it was the situps that caused it, but it is a strange coincidence.

Any ideas? It is starting to feel better after only 2 or 3 days.. but I would like to figure out what causes this injury to try and prevent it in the future.

that sounds a lot like a subluxated rib. if it is, any chiropractor could put it back for you. it sucks when it's out because it really affects your breathing and exercise and whatnot.

if you leave it alone, the pain and sensations you're feeling will go away (thanks to your afferent c-fibers and thalamus), but the problem will remain and cause a slight decrease in chest expansion and sometime a re-exacerbation of pain.

if it needs to be adjusted too frequently, you could end up with a chronically unstable rib. to try and keep this from happening (sometimes, it's just genetic), you want to try strengthening your intrinsic spine muscles as well as breathing exercises.
