can't figure out what's wrong...

first of all, here's my specs:

axp 2000+
1gb ddr400
2 x 120gb hd
radeon 9800 pro
asus a7n8x2.0
antec trupower 430w ps
xp pro sp2

well it seems that whenever i power on my computer, the system will continually reset itself in an infinite loop - i can't even get the system to post. i have actually gotten to the bios screen a couple times, but i can hear my hard drives stop and spin up continously like they have lost power and started up again. i know the cpu is good and i've done temperature tests so i don't think that's a problem. thinking the mobo was the problem, i popped in my old soltek 75-drv5 and i actually got the system to post. however, the hard drives were experiencing the same problem like they were on my a7n8x. so, i unplugged my radeon 9800 pro (which requires a ps lead), and threw in my old radeon 9600. now the computer works perfectly...but i'm a little confused - was my system not working because of a faulty video card, or was the power supply not supplying enough power, bad motherboard? i'm not a real computer guy so i'd appreciate any advice you guys could give me on what to do next.

try going back to the original config and removing a hard disk....that should prove whether it is a power problem or the graphics card!

Is your DDR 1 stick of 1GB or 2x 512MB?? try removing one of them too....

basically take out all non essentials and try again!

Welcome to the Forums!

See the sentance in bold above.

I'm guessing that you added the Asus mobo and didn't do a reformat/reinstall. I'm guessing this because your old mobo posts and works. It shouldn't work on the Soltek if you OS had the drivers installed for the Asus motherboard.

When you switch mobo's, you either need to reformat/reinstall and add the new mobo drivers or go through the steps outlined HERE in an Anandtech article.

i formatted one of the hard drives for the soltek board when i installed it though, sorry about not being very clear
