Can't figure out what is wrong with aunt's computer!

Hi guys,

My aunt dropped off her computer for me to work on and I'm not sure what the trouble was. She tried to reformat her old Sony Vaio with the system restore disks, but it failed. I got it working again, but it is not helping with the problem.

On bootup the Sony white text and black background is moving around a bit and is very blurry. I can barely read the "Press F3 to go to setup". It will then proceed to show the standard Microsoft 98 Plus! screen as it is loading. Yet the graphic is bad. I can see it, but parts of it is moving, other parts of the picture are over somewhere else.

HOWEVER. Then the monitor makes a noise like it is going into a different mode or something and it clicks over and then the computer has loaded the verification screen (where I have to enter the approx 20 digit code for Windows authentication. The picture is crystal clear and fine!!! WTF?

Why is it that I can barely read anything, yet alone the BIOS, but when it loads into finishing the settings for Windows everything is okay??

Please help me to fix this problem.

Note: Old Sony Vaio (1998), but I don't know the stats. Looks like standard PCI graphics card on the motherboard.

You may want to make sure the VIDEO is set correctly in the BIOS to VGA.

When the SONY Splash screen loads the onboard VGA controller is used for display
whereas when the WINDOWS Splash screen loads the Windows GUI driver is used.

Interesting. Where would this setting be in the BIOS? Last nite I could barely read anything in the BIOS because it was so messed up and blurry. Any idea on the keyboard arrow clicks or anything? This would be a very fun task...NOT!

If you haven't already done this, perhaps you would want to hook up another monitor or video card to her system..

Also, you should be able to reset the BIOS by unplugging the computer and removing the battery (be sure to leave it out for a few minutes).
