A German man tried to tip a waiter 25,000 marks ($11,000) from his savings after ordering a coffee, police said on Friday.

Police investigated and found out the man had taken the cash from his own bank account.

Whether the gift was legal or not is still under investigation.

Come on. It's his money. Leave the poor man alone.

Read the article! He is not all there mentally therefore his money might belong legally to his guardians or something. I personally would feel pretty pissed if I gave away all my money in a tempoary fit of insanity.

Also, tell me it would not be slightly dodgy if someone handed you a WAD of notes and asked you to take it. My guess was that he would be trying to dispose of evidence or something.

What if it was your Dad that went to a restaurant and tipped the person 1000% of the bill. And it was ALL his life savings.

I'd say that ANY person that does that has some problems. It doesn't take much sense to realize that. The waiter probably did not have much of a choice about questioning the validity... because someone would eventually want to find out where that money went. This way, if it turns out the guy is really generous he'll get to keep the cash, but, if not, he'll just look like a really great waiter and probably get some donations from others who think he did the right thing.

If I were a waiter I'd question it. $11k is a bit more than a generous tip. $100 I probably wouldn't. $1000 and I'd ask the guy and check the bills, $10k and I'd ask the cops.
