Cant even get power to it!

Hi

New to building and to the forum, any help would be much appreciated!!

So I am quite sure everything is physically installed correctly. I just recieved my new motherboard, after my last one seem to crap out on me. When I give it power, it stays on for only about 10-15 seconds before shutting itself off. I have tried 2 different power supplies. The same thing happens regardless of whether the video card, hard drives, optical drives or ram are installed.

I was extremely careful about static while handling the new motherboard, because i think thats what caused my first one to go (no problems till i transfered to a new case).

Can anyone tell me where to start? would rather not pay someone to fix this for me...
Any help is appreciated, I'll reply quickly to answer any questions that might help determine the problem!

my build:
intel pentium d 280 @2.8ghz
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P
g-skill 800 4x1GB
Seagate 1.5TB 7200rpm
Radeon 4870 DK 512mb
NZXT Tempest Case
Antex 650W Blue

reset your CMOS on the board via jumper, you may think about pulling battery or reset it from little post on back of board (pressable). Also only install 1 DIMM for the time being until you get the thing to stay on constantly. Once it stays up set the voltage to the correct value for the DIMM, i.e. if it's 1.8-2.0 set to 1.8. You'll probably have to bump the voltage up a tad to run with the 4 sticks in it. Do not go over max settings, get to where it's stable with them in once you get it to stay up.

That's about all I can think of.

awesome, ok ill start with that. "reset your CMOS on the board via jumper" is a little over my head, but I can do some research to figure out what that means. Im gonna pull the battery from the board and let it sit for awhile, then try a boot.

Is the processor heatsink fan plugged into the correct motherboard connector? On some boards, even if it's plugged in, but to the wrong connector, the computer will shut down because the board thinks the fan is not connected. The board and the manual, will have the correct connector labeled.

Sounds to me like something is not fully installed. i.e. partly out of the socket or you don't have the HS/fan on correctly.

You guys are good, thanks for the help. ya it was the HS/fan. one of the pins wasnt all the way in. Im a noob, what can i say

Hay we were all a n00b at one point, if you don't ask for help you never learn. Or should I say it will take you a hellova lot longer and might result in "learning" something the wrong way. Of course asking on a forum can sometimes leads to an idiot giving you bad information and you learning the wrong way to something. Don't feel bad about what you went thru here. I have been building PCs since you could buy the components and assemble it yourself pretty much. And I still run into weird issues like you had from time to time. And sometimes they take me a good while to figure out 🙂

Just wait until you build a "new" PC and one of the components is bad, and you don't realize it's the problem. Computers can be hell man, best advice - stick with it. I'm building one right now about to power it up for the first time. And I know anything can happen lol.
