Running the following system:

2.2GHz AthlonXP
X800GTO
1GB PC3200 (dual channel)
Viewsonic VX922 monitor

I have had no probs enabling 1280x1024 with any other game. HL/Oblivion/UT2K4/etc.

I installed FEAR today. Installed the latest patches (1.05 and then 1.06).

1280x1024 is not an option, no matter how I manually set the computer and graphics card specs. It goes up to 1280x960, then back to 800x600.

I am running all the latest drivers for EVERYTHING, including the monitor

The game runs fine. Just not at the native res of my monitor, so it looks like crap.

Help please.

Open settings.cfg in the FEAR directory, find the lines ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight, and change them to 1280x1024 respectively.

Yes, I know. It's a stupid config hack that shouldn't be required.

Hint, hint, Vivendi.

You rock. Thanks very much.

I Googled (didn't before posting. My bad. ) and found this.

Aha!

*edit*

NOT AHA! :( I guess with the latest patch, that config file disappears and is replaced by an APPLICATION. No way to add the resolution as described in the above link. I'll have to keep looking.

Funny, I have a 19" LCD and don't remember having to edit the config file. Either that resolution showed up for me, or if I was using 1280x960 it didn't look like crap.

Well, it doesn't look COMPLETELY like crap, but you can tell the monitor isn't happy about running at the reduced 10x76 resolution.

I'll try the 1280x960 and see what it looks like since the "fix" above is no long valid with the 1.06 patch installed.

You should still be able to edit the config file with the latest patch. Just make sure NOT to go into Options after doing so or it'll re-select a resolution from the list and reset it. In other words, take care of all your graphical options, then quit the game, edit the file, and go back in and just play. Should work.

Thanks much. I found said config file. It's in the "shortcut to user settings" folder and for some reason, it has a microsoft office file logo and extension. I opened it with notepad, made the change. Will try it now.

Being that there's no way to actually SEE that the game is running 1280x1024, I am running it a 1280x960. Not much a performance diff (using the built in benchmark) than 10x76.

I can't believe for such a popular game, with SIX damn patches released for it already, they don't support what's arguably the most poplular resolution among gamers these days! :|

WTF, Vivendi?

The config file edit works unless it was broken with one of the patches. You just can't go back to the Display settings menu in the game. The resolution shown there is not what you are running after editing the config file (I ran 1680x1050 but it said 640x480 and if you get into the screen it'll change to 640x480 when you hit Ok). Just edit the config file and stay out of the resolution menu. You can still set detail options.

Shouldn't your monitors OSD tell you the resolution the monitor is at?

Or use the driver settings or monitor OSD to set to 1:1 / no scaling. So you would be able to see a little bit of black bars on the top and bottom if it was running 1280x960.
