Can't eject DVD Tray

I've just updated my ststem due to a catastrophic hardware failure and evertthing seems to be fine.

I installed a new ASUS Rampage Formular motherboard with minimum fuss however I have come across a problem I have never seen before. The problem didn't exist at first whilst installing the OS but has gone pear shaped subsequently.

I have a Plextor DVD Writer PX-716A and the PX-708A which were working fine all the way through the installation of Vista (32bit)

I've removed one DVD drive as part of the troubleshooting process and tried both drives but still have the same problem.

I cannot eject the tray at all. Yes, I can manually eject the tray by inserting a pin in the hole on the front but the drive just doesn't want to work, it doesn't read anything.

On the front of the DVD the LED just flashes Green 3 times, pauses, then flashes another 3 times and continues like that. If I try to eject it, the LED goes a constant Orange but it doesn't eject, then after 10 seconds goes back to the green flashing LED. Using the OS to eject has the same results.

The drives are not faulty I've determined.

I did have an error message which basically said the drive is in use, therefore wait for the process to complete etc etc but nothing was using the Drive as far as I was aware, but I do feel like something is stopping the drive from working, i.e. something is accessing the drive. I'm convinced this is the problem. No Ad Ware, viruses are causing the problem as I've scaned my system using Kaspersky/AdAware.

How can I find out what is accessing the drive if anything? Nothing shows in the task manager...

I've reset the BIOS to defaaults, uninstalled the DVD drivers, reinstalled them so I'm just lost at the moment. Oh, a couple of times whilst trying to access the drive via the Device Manager the Device Manager has stopped responding also. Seems fine now.

HELP!!!

If something is accessing the drive then shut the system down and unplug the drive. After starting the computer up if it was accessing the drive you should get some sort of program error. If no then i think you'll need to replace the drive.

Thanks mpilchfamily.

I've tried your suggestion but to no avail!. So, thinking there was some form of RAID/SATA/IDE compatability issue with the new motherboard I thought I'd do away with the IDE DVD Drives and use SATA for both the RAID, Storage Hard Drives and now the DVD Writer. Went out and bought an LG Writer that uses SATA, but still the same problem.

I did use the backup facility in vista during mid installation and thought I#d at least restore back to a point where everything worked. Well I have two options, restore the backup from booting from the Vista installation DVD, but can't do that as the DVD Drive wont work! or I can use the F8 method but when using this it doesn't give me the option to resore, just boot off different drive. Dumb thing.

Lost!!

Any more advice would be appreciated.

Well, I got to the point where I was going to delete thew RAID setup and start all over again. Whilst actually re-booting to enter the BIOS and the RAID configuration screen I decided to pull the USB connections out of the back of the PC except the KB/Mouse. Tada....DVD drive started to work! Inserted the USB adaptors once again and everything tickedy boo. Annoyed.

Must of had a conflict or something when I was installing software after the OS! Lost for words....
