Can't edit files on NAS without their Creation Dates changing to current time.

Help! I am using a Seagate Central 4TB NAS drive attached to my router via Ethernet. It has been working fine so far for all kinds of file activities. But whenever I modify a file in one of its folders, the creation date for the file also updates and is changed to the same time as the new modified date.

Maybe relevant details:

I can move/copy folders to the drive and they maintain their created dates.

It happens for both a private user share on the NAS and for the Public share on it.

It happens for at least image files and text files.

I am able to edit files across two computers on the network just fine, the create date stays the same.

This happens from a new Windows 10 machine and Vista machine both.

I notice sometimes the date created seems to stay same until I access the file the next time.

I have updated the NAS firmware to the most recent version.

If it could be a permissions problem, I have been unable to change it from:

Everyone: Special Permissions only

nobody (Unix Group\nobody): Special Permissions only

nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup): Special Permissions only

(Those were there automatically, they are what I put there. I get "Access is denied" whenever try to add permissions or change ownership.)

I have Googled many phrases of this problem far and wide and come up with nothing. I really need to save the original create date because that's how I sort them in programs like Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa. Does anyone know what's going on or what to try to fix this problem, prevent the creation date from changing every time I edit the file?

Please, am desperate here.

Thanks, but I'm not having the problem with copying at all. The issue is just when editing the files individually, like in notepad, or adding tags to the images.

The knowledge base link, is there a typo in the url you gave? It takes me to something not quite what I'm looking for either....

I read through the whole linked thread and did not notice any clean cut method described to manage the date created like with some utility. Hmm.....

The possible relevant part of the KB was regarding the document's properties. Explore properties and there should be three dates - created, modified, and accessed.

Does this problem affect you if you edit a file not on the NAS. but on the PC? That may give you a work around.

Yes, I checked that again. Wherever I edit a file, either residing on another computer or on the same computer, that creation date behaves as it should (does not change). Only issue is when it's on the NAS. .
