Can't dual boot Ubuntu 7.04 and XP Pro

I don't know why I'm having so much trouble with this. It seems my configuration should be very common so it must be simple to get working.

I currently have:

IDE0 Master: Seagate 250gb PATA (partitioned as a NTFS data drive: D:\)
IDE0 Slave: WD 80gb PATA (Ubuntu drive)
IDE1 Master: DVD-RW
SATA0: Samsung 500gb SATA (75gb C: system/boot/active partition, rest of drive partitioned as NTFS data drive)

A while ago when I booted the Ubuntu 7.04 LiveCD and installed it, I simply hit forward and whatnot and let it use the default settings as far as the grub location, since in the past it was all that I needed to do really. That didn't work, as when the computer rebooted, it simply booted into XP. It has something to do with my SATA drive and where grub is being installed, as in the past with only PATA drives, it required nothing special to be done.

After a bunch of research, I read that I should be able to install grub manually. I followed the directions and did so, except after rebooting, the screen was flooded constantly (screen after screen every second or so) with "GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB". Oops.

I ended up being able to clear the MBR and back to where I am now, with just XP. I don't know what is the problem or why it is so difficult to simply dual boot, but I suspect it is something to do with SATA. I dual booted MANY times in the past, but that was before I had a SATA drive (finally got my first one recently).

So although Ubuntu is currently installed on that 80gb drive, it is no big deal if I have to reinstall.

So my question is, what steps do I need to take to get grub properly installed? Like what location should it be installed to? I always installed it to the MBR in the past, so when I wanted to get rid of it, I simply used the Recovery Console and 'fixmbr'. But I don't know what I need to do when a SATA drive is involved. The SATA drive is the XP drive, not the Ubuntu one.

On ubuntu, GRUB installs to what it thinks is fist boot device, probably IDE0 master.
On most other Linux distro's, you can be more specific what is boot order and where to install GRUB.

not saying you can't do it with ubuntu...it is not as easy as on rest.
