can't download

I have dsl. All websites load fairly fast but whenever i try to download anything either immediately or after a few seconds it says IE was unable to connect to the website. I tried downloading things that 100% work, like AIM from www.aim.com or things from www.download.com . They didnt work. I put all IE settings to default and turned off my firewall, didnt help. Tried with a different modem and ethernet card, didnt help. My specs: Athlon XP 1800+, 512 ddr, realtek 8139 ethernet card, win xp pro . . . i dont think anything else matters pertaining internet connectivity. I have all the latest drivers, if that matters. What might be happening/how to fix it?

did you call tech support for your dsl? normally they can fix problems like this on their end, or maybe one of the resident geniuses here can fix it, you might also try the networking forum.

I think the problem may be with your proxy settings. I had this same problem myself. AIM and alot of download.com files come down through FTP sites.
Try tools-->internet options-->connections-->LAN settings and check "automatic detection of proxy"
If it's already checked, give your DSL provider a call and see if they require you to go through a particular proxy.

I'm tellin' you man, it's a proxy issue. I had the EXACT same problem for about a day, until I changed my proxy settings back. I screw around with them because Adelphia makes you go through a proxy (they call it a "caching" server).
