Can't do anything with FireWire , Camcroder , IEEE1394 - Please Help !!

I purchased a new panasonic PV-DV401 camcorder recently and also ordered a new firewire card from pricewatch. I cannot get the IEEE1394 connection going with the the firewire card using the camcorder. Though , the USB connection does work. I get the message the either camcorder is switched off or there is no card available - in effect nothing is working.. If anyone has used a firewire card before with a DV camcorder before i would really appreciate some help . The reason i am trying to use the firewire card is that USB is too slow !!! . Please help ..... 😕
