for the life of me i cant figure this game out. i understand some parts of it but im failing to see how to EVER make enough money to do anything. if anyone has some stragity guides or anything for it please let me know (i know its open ended and such i just cant do a damn thing)

I believe some people were saying starting the game on normal difficulty is really stifling, and that you need to start it on easy for a more appropriate experience. But, I've not played it myself.

I recommend in the beginning using your Buster to fight pirates to try and capture their ships is the ebst way to go. Pirate Falcons are especially lucrative when captured and they seem to bail their ships relatively quickly. The trick to combat is not being hit, and to accomplish this you want approach your enemies at full speed while rolling and strafing at same time so you are performing a sort of corkscrew flight path towards the enemy. When you do this right you are nearly impossible to hit. Once you get within 800m of your enemy start firing and it's important that just about all your shots hit, because the more shock damage you do them and faster it comes the more likely they are to bail. Once you pass them you can cut your engines and then maneuver behind them so that they cant hit you and you are at point blank range so all your shot will pretty much hit. Stay back there firing until the other ship bails (which is not all too common mind you) or blows up then quickly move on to next target.

Make sure you have the fight software packages so you can activate auto-aim. This just produces a crosshair on whoever you target which will take into account the tagret's speed and direction. The autoaim icon is a small square near the bottom left on the scree under your gun slots. Click on it until it looks like an asterisk. So now when you fight pirates just try to fire in the autoaim corsshair that is produced and you should be fine

Keep blowing up pirates and capping their ships within Argon space (Elena's Fortune is a good sector) building up your reputation and cash reserves. You wont need to ugprade your ship or guns anytimes soon, just build enough money to afford a Space Fuel Distillery or one of those Space Weed factories because these are easily the most profitable factories in the game.

Yes, start on easy and theres tons of guides at the official forums. This game is cool but extremely hard to get into because you can spend hours flying around in your crap box getting absolutely nowhere.

Yes, go to the official forums. They have some great guides over there.

I figured this was another X3 bug report.

Oh and if you want some motivation to continue playing, read the Penny-Arcade forums thread about X3. It is like 50 pages long and full of screenshots of how the game turns out. Really makes you want to sit down and get better at the game.

Start by capturing and selling pirate ships like lozina said, then start up some traders and do some trading yourself (rastar oil and sunrise flowers and the like are most profitable). Later, once your rep is high enough, start doing the BBS missions and you call pull in 300-400K for appointment runs (per stop, with 10 or more stops, you can make several million very easily) and good amounts for assassination and Xenon invasions (these only happen once in each border sector however).

Was thinking about buying this game...but a little fearful about the Starforce copy protection that comes with the game.

There are a few forums and sites that say Starforce can cause system instability or even physically damage DVD/CD/hard drives.

Has anyone who plays this game have any trouble with Starforce goofing up their system?

I was in the same boat as you. I was skeptical about Starforce. I think it's just the people who pirate software are doing all the talking. I have this game and Prince of Persia: Two Thones which also uses Starforce. I haven't had any problems with either game.

About a month ago I was just reading some thread talking about starforce, with a link to a detection and removal tool. I ran the detection tool and it said I had it installed - not sure what game exactly it came from. I had been having really bad lockup problems, like every couple days my computer would lock up when either emptying my recycling bin or just opening My Computer. I just lived with it for many months, I just figured it was general system instability and I needed a fresh windows reload but didn't want to do it. Anyways, after removing starforce (which I never even knew about prior to then), all my lockup problems went away. So I'd say at least in my setup, it caused significant problems.

How could copy protection damage a CD/DVD drive?
Based upon what I read about StarForce on forums and a couple sites here is the basics about it:
1) StarForce installs hidden device drivers on your system without letting you know.
2) These device drivers can cause system instability due to them trying to work in tandem with IDE drivers for your HD/CD/DVD drive.
3) They can force DVD/CD drives into PIO mode, which can result in bad reads/writes to the drive. This forcing can happen on any media in the drive...not just the game CD. In some few cases forcing the drive into PIO mode can supposedly damage it because the drive was never supposed to go into PIO mode.
4) The device drivers allow user level (ring 3) code to execute as system level (ring 0)...basically it opens security holes on your PC.

This has StarForce?
Well, one more I wont be buying.

Dont suppose anybody knows about a web site with a quick and easy list of the games that use starforce do they?

EDIT: Nevermind. I forgot someone sent me the link a long time ago.
The site is called "Boycott Starforce".

I bought the game and installed it yesterday using my external USB 2.0 dvd burner. The install worked fine but when I tried to play the game, it kept saying to put the CD in another drive. It pissed me off beyond belief because I had to go rummaging around my computer parts bin and grab an old dvd player and stick it in my computer. My computer sits like 8 feet from my desk in a cubby on the floor (so I don't get annoyed with noise) and I hate having to walk over to it to stick a damn CD in when there's no fvcking legit reason I should not be able to use an external drive.

The game looks okay.. but runs really slow on my system that has a Radeon 9700.. Still though, if I would've known they would deny me the ability to use my external drive, I would've just pirated the game. This is bullFVCKINGSH!T!

argh.
