Can't create steam account - "can't find master authenticaion server bla blah"

Just bought HL2, first pc game purchase in a while. After spending a good 15 minutes installing it
i can't even create an account! is anyone else having this problem?
 
Here's a tip for all of you guys once you do get Steam up and running (stick with it - the servers are heavily bogged down and probably will be for the next week).

If (once you've registered) Steam is busy and you can't log onto HL2, then disable your network connection (or just unplug the internet cable) and run Steam. It will tell you it was unable to log into the Steam servers and ask if you'd like to start Steam in offline mode. Click Yes and then you will be able to run it off your HD like usual but without having to wait for Steam's slow servers.

Note: you must have the game fully installed/loaded at 100% and you must have logged into Steam once before so your settings are saved on the PC.
 
Geesh, 40 million in R&D to make the game and this is the experience you get trying to register your copy? Pathetic.
 
That's not working for me jiffylube, it just stays trying to login forever when I turn off my cable modem.

Edit: Now, even though I told it before to save my password and it always auto-logged in before, it gives me a message saying Offline mode is disabled because there is no Steam login information stored on this computer 🙁
 
Keep trying. I was able to create a new account. I tried to recover a previous account but that was a waste of time. It let me set up a new account after a couple dozen tries. :roll: and then it let me unlock my HL2 files.

does not work, says login information is not on my machine. steam is BS

While this normally works. For me it says I don't have my account settings on my computer or some crap... which is totaly BS I have been using steam for awhile so I know what I'm doing. I just think steam is toatly borked right now. I will kill them if its not fixed by the weekend.
 
At least for me, it's now saying "connection refused" instead of "cannot find server" like it was earlier. Perhaps this is one step closer to actually being able to create an account and buy the game. :roll::roll::roll:

Edit: Yup, I spoke too soon - "cannot find server" again. :roll:

Edit 2: Ooh, "connection reset by peer". That's a new one. 🙂roll: )
 
damn.. i was planning on going home early to play - I guess I'll just stay at work. The game played fine this morning but it seems that doesn't matter since HL2 always tries to authenticate every time you play.
