i have reinstalled windows and downloaded all the updates, along with installing the software that came with my various hardware pieces. from the top of my head i can list the software suite that comes with the sb audigy, nero, windvd, winproducer, logitech itouch to name a few. i have no games installed yet. i just remembered that i downloaded realplayer and quicktime.

anywho, whenever i try to create a system restore point it tells me that one cannot be created at this time and to reboot my computer and try again. i did this a couple times but it still would not let me create one. and when i checked there are no restore points on my system at all.

i would make a system restore point before you installed most of the software, thats just my opinione since it seems that a proggie you have is causing you the problems.

ok, i have reinstalled windows twice since the last time i wrote, have not added any programs, or downloaded anything. i still cant create a restore point. i know that i was able to do this in the past with this copy of windows xp pro. the only thing that i can think of that has changed is that i moved to a new mobo(epox 8k3a+), am using the integrated raid witht he supplied drivers, a benq 48/16/48 cdrw, and a 19" flat panel monitor. before i was using a gigabyte 7vrxp mobo, but not the integrated raid because the dimwits didnt put the floppy in the box), a lite-on 48/12/48 cdrw, and my tv as a monitor. another that may have changed is that i have moved from a 1700+ cpu to a 2200+ cpu. although i am not sure if i did system restores with the 2200+ or not.

the first time i reinstalled windows i formatted my drive using the quick method and the second time the long method. is there a difference between the two???

about the only thing that i can think of is that it said that the high point raid driver was newer than the one that windows had on file. it said that it could cause some problems. where can i get the latest driver for this. it is a highpoint 372 raid controller.

i think that i may reinstall windows again while i wait for a reply and use windows driver and see what happens.

any suggestion/experiences are welcome.

I hesitate to recommend as I'm NO expert but I have spent the last 12 months working on new CPUs and installing XP on many of these systems. I had a heck of a time getting XP to play nice with RAID arrays. I attributed it to immature drivers. One system wouldn't boot in safe mode while running a RAID 0! I finally gave up on RAID, but I'm not saying you should. I just lack the expertise to make it happen. Just from what I've learned from troubleshooting in general, "what's different" is a very valid approach. Not to waist your time, but would you consider loading the OS on one HD with the RAID turned off to see if the problem goes away?

Also, have you checked your Mobo's website for a Tech Support knowledge base, forum or FAQ area? That's something I often neglect to do. Hope this helps a bit.

yeah, i kinda think that it may be the raid driver also, that is why i was asking if anyone knew where i could get an updated one that hopefully works without the bug, if that is indeed my problem. i will take your advice though and try reinstalling with no raid and see if that works.

Try disabling system restore, then re-enabling it. I had the same issue..fixed it right up. Highpoint RAID btw.

it worked, it worked. it was a variation on what you said rbv. i had already tried dis- and en- abling the system restore before i even started all this reloading crap. anywho something struck me and said to disable it, restart the computer and then enable it. it worked like a charm. the system created its own restore point, and i was able to create two more myself even after i rebooted. so i just finished reinstalling windows for the last time(hopefully). along the way i have found out that i have the latest raid driver and i have flashed my mobo bios(first time i actually got it to work). thanks for the help everyone. ;) ;) ;)
