Can't connect Win 2000 to internet

I just got a semi-old laptop, 800 mhz duron w/ 128MB RAM
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prod...ory&lc=en&os=181&product=94957&cc=us&#
, and installed win2k on it last night (slipstreamed sp4, later installed the update rollup available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta...-4531-b52b-bf28b324c662&DisplayLang=en

Have not installed a 3rd party firewall yet.
Installed all the win2k drivers from compaq including the nic driver and it seems fine in device manager. I plugged in the lan cable from my cable modem to the win2k lappy (the same cable works fine on my xp box) and it forms a connection on the network (if i unplug the cable the X(broken) connection icon shows in taskbar. When it's plugged in, it shows a few measly packets being sent, but nothing incoming and I can't connect with firefox or IE to the web. Looking at the local network properties, I have the same things as my xp box (ms network client, QoS packet squeduler, network file/print sharing, and internet protocol (tcp/ip). The settings are the same on both machines, but the laptop refuses to connect to the internet. The only difference is that under 2k, if i click properties of tcp/ip -> advanced -> option tab, i have 2 things listed: IP Security and TCP/IP filtering, whereas the xp box has no IP security field. From IP Security, I tried adjusting the settings from the default IPSEC (whatever that is) to the "use the following IP security policy" but it made no difference.
I also tried to network to the xbox from 2k but it was the same result. Tried Ubuntu 5.10 Live CD to see if I could connect (works on xp box), but waiting for ubuntu +firefox to load was taking an eternity on this 128 megger (maybe if someone knows a lighter live linux that's easy to connect to the internet?). But any advice you can offer me is appreciated. I hope I was thorough enough, I know little about networking and never used win2k til now, but I know how to follow clear directions

I didn't hear mention of a router so you are using the sole ethernet port on your cable modem. In that case, some cable modems marry a MAC address. I'd suggest a power down of the cable modem for 1 min or more. Plug it into the win2k machine. Turn on the modem then turn on the win2k machine. See if that works.

If you are still not surfing, can you run an ipconfig and post the first 2 octects of your ip address here. Example 192.168.1.101 post it as 192.168.x.y. Don't want you to post any public ips.

Unplugging the cable modem did the trick. Thank you sir, I solute your networking skills:thumbsup:

Could you briefly explain why an xp box could work but not 2k laptop? It worries me if I ever decided to take the 2k laptop to an internet cafe or somewhere- "Uh, excuse me Mr. Owner sir, I use 2k. Could you please power down your modem for a minute so I can connect?"

But now there's another problem- my old win95 (no lectures, please) laptop can no longer connect to the internet after this unplugging/pluggin. I set it up for net access for the first time this summer, and unlike the win2k lappy, it worked "out of the box" by just installing the pcmcia card and plugging in the cable (kinda disappoints me how 95 could beat 2k in this rescpect). Not now though. Looking at the lights of the cable, activity is going on but it won't receive any data. Any ideas? FYI, the xp box still connects fine, the ip address is:
210-20-1xy-qrs

Here's a brief explaination of what you experienced. http://www.duxcw.com/faq/ics/cablemac.htm

I doubt you'll have the same problem at an internet cafe/hotspot, if you do other will as well. Win2k is not obsolete nor nothing to be ashamed of. It was 2004 before i finally bit the bullet to goto XP from 2k. I still love 2k to this day.

If your win95 won't connect, do the same thing. Power off the modem. Plug the ethernet cable to the 95 machine. Power up modem then power up 95 machine. If you know how to release and renew your ip, then that would be just as sufficient. I think it's a wise investment for you to get a router thus you can share your cable to all of your machines simultaneously. Wireless routers cost $50 (generous figure) or less these days. If you have any other questions or need any further clarification feel free to ask. =)

All of the cable modems I have seen require a reboot any time you connect them to a device with a different MAC address. If you want internet on several different computers, it is probably time to get a router.

I need some help again. I brought this laptop to my familys house for the holidays and I cant connect. They have a motorola cable modem and netgear router (model wgt624). They have 2 xp machines hooked up that work fine when hooked up to that router. My win2k lappy exhibits the same problem as originally posted here: the network icon shows its connected (no more red x) but i cant connect to the internet. Its plugged in with a lan cable (i also tried the same lan cable that one of the family comps is hooked up to to make sure it wasnt a cable problem). Under tcp/ip the family comp is set to automatically obtain ip address and dns server, and so is my 2k laptop.
ipconfig on family comp says: 192.168.x.y
my laptop: 169.254.xxx.xxx

We have a router here so there shouldnt be any need to power down the modem right? I dont think my brother would want me to do that anyway

Got it solved- i simply reset the laptop (when i brought it from my house, i had it in hibernate mode, and at my parents house i booted up 2k from this mode). Can someone tell my why there was a problem connecting from using hibernate, and if there is a way to avoid resetting? I prefer never to reset/shut down b/c my sound drivers are flaky and don't always initialize correctly when rebooting, but once they're working, they stay working.

You can do ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew a few times to fix it without a restart, usually.

i don't know a whole lot about ipconfig, but i had guessed that might work and tried it but it gave me an error message, something about "local". maybe it was a fluke. anyway, thanks for the reply, i'll keep it in mind next time i bring the lappy into a foreign environment
