Can't connect to workgroup computers

I'm living at a fraternity and the whole place is wired together. I went through and defined my work group and all, but when I click 'View workgroup computers' it says 'Sigma nu is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.' So I talked to the guy who's got everyone hooked up around here and he fooled with some stuff but I still get the same message everytime.

This is kind of general and I can't give you much more information than that, but what do I need to do to get this working?

Thanks.

find the computer you want to connect to and type the name as so \\computername in the My Computer text bar.

You can't just simply look in Network Neighborhood and see all of the computers in the same network without a centralized system or some advanced network management/configuration.

You will also need an account on each one of the machines you want to connect to, unless 'Guest' is enabled, which it shouldnt be

Well as far as I know there is a "Sigma nu" network, and anyone who is connected into the internet here can access it. I don't believe it's through any one computer, just all those connected can share files with one another of the network.

ummm im not an expert but sometimes changing the domain name helps.

for example the default should be WORKGROUP, the domain at your frat house would probably be the name of the frat. And i know its taboo to say FRAT, but im too lazy to spell it out.

to change domain just goto

Control Panel -> System -> Computer Name -> Change

Go on a friends computer that can acess the system and see if the domain is different.

I hope this helps

This is why you should kick the person running this out.

The year is 2006, almost 2007. Sharing files between windows hosts is not difficult.
