Can't connect to Wireless Linksys Router anymore

After upgrading my Linksys WRT54G V2.0 with the new Sveasoft public firmware ( Satori-4.0G ), it seems I can't connect to my router anymore. After typing 192.168.1.1 I don't get in the admin page. I just get a "cannot find server"-error page.
I tried many thing to fix it. I resetted the router many times by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds (sometimes even longer). Pinging the router doesn't help also. I get this message:
Microsoft(R) Windows DOS
(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1990-2001.

C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1>ping 192.168.1.1

Pinging ? with 32 bytes of data:

DHCP works, but when I connect my network cable into the router it gives this:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig /all

I even pulled out the plug and restarted my computer three times. But nothing happened.
I tried to fill in the ip-address and default gateway manually, like this:
192.168.1.101 (ip)
255.255.255.0
196.168.1.1 (gateway),
but still nothing happens. The router keeps assigning my card 196.254.104.137 as a ip-address.

Even after putting my NIC in another slot, nothing happened.

What do I have to to connect to 192.168.1.1 again? I saw some people having the problem with this firmware. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? I just got the router yesterday....

Your router is not assigning you the 169 address, that is an APIPA address. Windows automatically gives you that address when it can't find a DHCP server.

If you are getting that address, you still have your machine configured to get an IP from DHCP. You need to give the machine a static IP.

Excuse me for my noobness 🙂, but how do I give my machine a static ip?
I tried to fill in the ip-address and default gateway manually, like this:
192.168.1.101 (ip)
255.255.255.0
196.168.1.1 (gateway), but I think that's not what you mean.

Thanks for the fast reply by the way 🙂

Yeah, that's how you do it. Just to be sure, you go to the properties of your network connection, double click on tcip/ip. Change the first radio button to use the following IP address and type in the IP, subnet and gateway. Click OK. Once the dialog disappears, you should see the static IP if you run ipconfig.

Oke I did that and this is the outcome:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig /all

Then I pinged 192.168.1.1 which used to be my router and this is what I got.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping 192.168.1.1

Isn't the NIC pinging itself? If I type 192.168.1.1 in my browser I still can't get in the admin page of my router.

No you are pinging the router, unless there is something else on the network with that IP.

Not sure why the page isn't coming up. Try unplugging the router and plugging it back in.

I just tried it, but unfortunately still the same. What is it with this firmware? There is no other computer on the network with that ip-address.
It must be something else. I tried to reinstall Linksys' newest firmware (wrt54gv2_2.04.4_US_code.exe ---> self-executable), but it just won't upload for the same reasons as above. It seems like it connects to the router when I type in the username and passwod, but when it wants to upload the firmare it gives a message that it can't connect.

Oke I just tried lots of things here, like putting a switch between the router and my computer. I pinged 192.168.1.1 and I got a reply, but when I connect to 192.168.1.1 via my browsers (FireFox and IE), the host can't be found.
Then I tried connecting another machine, with another NIC, directly with the router. Unfortuanately I got the same as above.
Does anyone here know what's going on? There must be a way to connect to the router, right?

have you unplugged everything from your router? this will isolate your linksys box to make sure that you're not hitting something else for some reason. take out the 'internet' plug from the back, and plug your computer into one of the 1,2,3,4 slots (doesn't matter which one). see if you can get to the admin page that way.

if not, hit the reset button on the box and start over. you may need to reboot your router & comp in order to reconnect the two if you don't know how to use the ipconfig command and force it to get an ip again.

I tried that and still nothing...Then I tried lots of other things (don't even remember what, because I didn't get any sleep 😉 )
After this, the router didn't even want to take a ping anymore. Just nothing could be done anymore. I thought that it was really the end of the thing, untill I googled onto http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net:81/redhat/wrt54g_revival.html I tried it and the method gave my router it's life back 🙂

I found a way to flash the router via command prompt. I did it via a tftp command;
Type in: tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put c:\the_new_firmware.bin 192.168.1.1 and after a few seconds you'll get the message that it has succesfully uploaded. The -i in the command stands for a binary upload and the rest in the line is self explanatory.
When you keep an eye on the router you'll then notice (just keep waiting, because it takes a few seconds) that the router reboots again. This is some great info for people who can't flash their linksys wrt54g anymore. It should work for other linksys routers as well.

All in all I can say that everything I tried resolved in absolutely no progress. I am still were I was left; I can only ping the router. And still I believe there must be a way to get into the darn thing, because I won't give up easy 😉. So a huge bump/kick on this thread...🙂
