Steam Error Message

I respected Steam at first, but I have hardly used it since I purchased HL2. I played HL2 last night when my computer was not able to connect to the Internet and it worked perfectly in Offline Mode. When I tried it this morning, I was prompted for a password because my computer had an active Internet connection. My old password should have been stored, so I'm not sure why I was prompted. I tried every variation of possible passwords and could not log in, so I went through password recovery. The PW recovery process appears to be working, I'm able to enter a verification code and change my password. However, I still cannot connect to Steam. The Windows Firewall is disabled (including the background service), my router is configured for DMZ, and I don't run any security/antivirus software (performance freak, you see).

Steam was a really great idea, but it's unforgivable that it would have problems like this that prevent me from playing my own damn game.

[sarcasm]
I should just buy the XBOX version!

If I go to www.steampowered.com and click on "Support", the page it takes me to indicates that the support phone number is closed on Christmas and 01/01/06.

Where the hell is this phone number?!

I tried completely uninstalling Steam and HL2 and reinstalling from my original disc. It still gives me the same error message.

Firewall? I do not remember what ports Steam uses, but you should be able to do a google search and then make sure your hardware firewall is setup to allow it and in addition to that, that you create an exception in the Windows firewall if applicable.
