Cant connect to pc on network.

My network is up and running, all 3 pc's see each other, and share files easily, i just want to test how fast my network really is. i tried to run a ftp on 1 computer and let the other computer connect to the server and see how fast it can transfer files, however, it didn't work, is there any other ways to do this, i'm running a router, linksys BEFSR41, i know i'm doing something wrong, i just dont what. I'm running all 10/100 network cards and router.

please help. 🙁

I was wondering the same thing tonight. I did a search with the word "benchmark" in this networking forum and came up with 1 thread. in it there were a couple of links to sites that had network benchmarking programs. I downloaded from the first link. You have to download 2 files. One is the main file, and then you have to download another file that you put on all 3 computers. You can just put the 1st program on the main computer. It works pretty cool. I clocked mine at 83Kb/sec with a 1000/kb file.

The ftp test you were trying to pull off, is really a good test, for showing how fast the network is.

It will not show how fast file sharing under windows is though, at least not under windows 98. Because for some reason ftp works a lot faster.

tests on my system:
pc1 over 100Mbit to router over 10Mbit to pc2: around 1 MByte/s
pc1 over 100Mbit to router: depends on the direction and the load on the router (it's a win2k box, which I also use for computing tasks), between 1.5MB/s and 4.5MB/s

make sure you measure the speed in your ftp-server and do not use the indication IE gives you...

btw i tried Qcheck, but it didn't do any benchmarks that appealed to me.

I'm using Win2k, and the 2 other computers are win ME, i've set up the ftp server on win2k

How do i do the ftp test to test how fast my network is?

i tried qcheck, i got around 60mbit, average around all computers.. on TCP

i don't know if IIS can tell you how much bandwidth you are using...
I use vermillion ftp, which is a simple shareware ftp server (download at tucows)
It can show how fast a transfer is going , and also the total bandwidth used by the server.

You could also download a shareware ftp client, many of them can also show how fast a download is going.

Or even simpler, you could use the Performance Counters included in win2k to measure the bandwidth use on a certain NIC.
1) Start -> Programs -> Administrative tools -> Performance.
2) right click in the graph area -> add counters...
3) performance object -> network interface
4) select counters from list -> Bytes total/sec
5) select instances from list -> "here comes your NIC"
6) Click on Add
the use of that program is very straight forward

measure your network performance by copying files from one pc to another (using ftp or filesharing, doesn't matter)

happy testing

Thx alot, that really helped,

when i transferred a 18 meg files to another computer, the graph looked kinda spiky, when it was transferring, it hits 100 mbit then drops, then again it hits 100 mbit, then drops a lot, etc etc.. is this normal ?

i took a screenshot, but i dont know of any good website to host it..
