Can't connect to or through router

Sorry if this has been answered before, but i cant seem to find a solution in searches.

I have a Linksys 4 port router. I get all function lights lit up on it and dsl modem, but I do not get any internet access. I have tried to use the ip for router config and that does not work either. I am running win 7 64b with bitdefender for firewall/anti virus if that helps. Not sure what other information would be needed at this time. Any help would be greatly appreciated as i would really like to have access to both my netflix bluray player and internet at the same time with out having to cable swap all the time.

Take the router out of the picture and see if devices work directly plugged into the Modem (which is probably a modem+router). If devices do work, then most likely the Modem gives out IP's on the same subnet as your router, IE you get a 192.168.1.x from both devices. If this is the case, then the router is simply confused as to where the packets need to go. Give it a shot, if this IS the case post back and we can give you an action plan.

edit: Please post both device models.

Are you sure its cabled correctly? Check to make sure the cable from the DSL modem is connect to the WAN port of the router and the Ethernet cable for the computer and Blu-ray player is connected to the LAN ports.

Next, confirm that you have configured the router for use with DSL. In other words, it has to be configured to use PPPoE and you may need to enter a username and password for it to "dial" and connect.

Lastly, check to make sure the router is getting an IP address from the ISP and the computer and Blu-ray player is getting IP addresses from the router.

Ok, Both devices work when they are directly connected to dsl modem.
As of yet, I have not been able to access the router for any config. I get all good connectivity lights on both router and modem when I try to connect through router, but everything I have tried so far to get into the router config just leaves me with a "page can not be found". I will admit right now, that even though i feel pretty good with most things on my pc, networking has always been tough for me to get figured out. Thanks again for your help.

Disconnect the router from the DSL modem. Connect your PC to one of the LAN ports on the router and see if the PC gets an IP address from the router. If so, put the default gateway address (default is 192.168.1.1 for a Linksys router) into your browser to access the router's configuration page. Change the router's LAN IP address and DHCP range to something that does not conflict with the DSL modem (for example, if the modem is using 192.168.1.1, set your router to use 192.168.0.1, or 10.10.10.1, or something similar). Then reconnect the router to the modem and see if you can get online through the router.

Wow, after so much stumbling and bumbling its working. Thank you very much folks. I am guessing that because I had tried to access the router before with the cable from the modem attached that it was causing me to not be able to access the the router. The IP was as guessed set to 192.168.1.1, changed to 192.168.0.1 and it worked right away.
