Can't connect to Internet

I am working on a friend's machine and have an odd networking quirk. I am on the Internet though a switch and router and all other machines in the house work fine. However on this one I cannot get anywhere on the internet. I am able to browse my network and see my other computers as well as copy files through my internal network. Also, I cannot ping any other computers including the router, which is assigning the IP address, I have DHCP enabled. When I look at IPCONFIG it appears to have the correct networking settings and assignments being loaded. I have also tried an XP repair of the network connection. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Something on the computer is bjorked. Is there a firewall running on the PC? Is DNS set statically? Run ipconfig /all and make sure you have the right DNS and default gateway.

I checked the XP firewall and it is off and that should not stop ping from working anyway I don't think. Also I did IPCONFIG /all and the DNS, gateway, etc. all look good. Also, I would think I could ping the router and get a response which I don't. Thanks for your suggestions.
