can't connect to internet-SOLVED

EDIT: FIGURED IT OUT... NM

I can connct to my 802.11b linksys router through a wired connection typing in the standard linksys IP but I cannot connect to the internet. thinking it might be my network card or some setting that got screwed up I hooked up my wireless adapter and I still couldnt hook up. Other computers work fine. However when I connected to some other router in my neighborhood using the adapter I was able to get online.

I also noticed the internet gateway in "network connections" is disabled when I set a specific IP, however when I enable it... it doesnt enable.

so wtf is going on?

a little history: basically I was reconnecting my cables and powering down and up the networking gear. thats when I noticed my connection was hosed. I quickly realized i had the cable modem hooked up to the wrong port (uplink instead of WAN). still couldnt get it to work but then I changed the network settings to automatically configure IP instead of setting it to 192.168.1.105. Now I could connect to the internet but I couldnt connect to my router. fiddling around I'm back to square one... the internet doesnt work, but I can connect to my router.

in the MS help I ran some network diagnostic and the error seems to be in the DNS server search. It has a FAILED message.

1. if you use static IPs (ones that you assign yourself) you must enter a DNS server.

2. What IP are you typing to get to the router? Try 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.10

3. Before you setup the internet connection, you must disconnect your cable modem's power for about a minute.

4. If you do get onto your router, make sure it is set to DHCP for your WAN/Internet connection. In "Status" there should be a set of buttons to renew and release the DHCP address. "release" and then "renew." Hopefully you get an IP address such as 68.xx.xx.xx . If you do not get DNS server IPs, call your ISP and find out why they are off, and what the Ips are so you can manually type them in.

good luck

EDIT: guess you figured it out 😱
