Can't connect to internet anymore

I have SWBell DSL. The DSL modem is connected to an RT314 router, which is in turn connected to 3 computers. On one of the computers, internet access just quit working. I couldn't check my email, load a webpage, or connect with my chat programs. The router is not the problem, as I connected the modem directly to this computer and used the PPPoE software to connect. The software connected, but I still couldn't access the internet. My computer can still see across this network to other computers, but this might be because I also have ipx/spx and NetBEUI installed.
I think I found one clue when using Trillian to connect to my AIM account; it gives me an error message, saying it "Couldn't create socket." IE just spits out a cannot load webpage message, and Outlook express just says it cannot find the mail server. It's the Trillian error message, though, that leads me to belive my connection is fine, but that there may be something screwed up in Winblows (98se, BTW.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: My system in trouble is the one listed in my sig. At the time of this happening, I was using DHCP from the router on this computer.

Bump... really need help on this one guys... I'm already considering a reformat, but I really don't want to do it again, since I just did it 2 weeks ago.

I have 2 computers sharing a cable modem through an SMC router. When I have problems like this with one machine but not the other, I open up networking on both machines and check all settings to make sure everything matches and nothing's been changed. Eventually I find something that got changed, make the 2 machines match again (except for IP address) and press on.

Sounds to me like possibly a DNS problem? If you type an IP address into your browser instead of a URL, can you connect then?

Are you able to ping IP addresses through DOS? But not domain names?

Have you installed Bearshare/etc lately? Or other software that may include spyware? Or uninstalled ZoneAlarm?

Take a look over here. The issue described here is not limited to above factors, but the fix has worked where the symptoms are the same.

Yes, I CAN ping numeric Ip's from a DOS prompt, and yes I did uninstall ZoneAlarm recently when I switched to Sygate.... I don't think I've installed any spyware recently. I'll give your fix a try now.

Ok, thanks a lot Ladi, that did the trick. So was it uninstalling ZA that messed it up?
