Can't connect through modem

I've got a Toshiba Satellite. After about 3 months the modem quit working. I use NetZero and have XP.

When I go to "control panel"
"phone and modem options"
"Modems" tab
it says "Toshiba Software Modem Com3"
when I click "properties"
then "Diagnostics"
then "Query Modem"
it says "The port that the modem is attached could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional."

I've checked and there are no conflicts. I've put it on different Com ports and still no good.

Any ideas? Is this hardware or software problem. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the driver a couple of times. I think it did begin happening when I had a virus but that's taken care of. Could it still be a virus. My protection says I'm clean.

At one point after it had started doing this I got it working again and then it quit working again. Got it working one more time by uninstalling/reinstalling Netzero but nothing since then.

Thanks.

saw this on a google search, hope it helps:

Try deleting the modem entry in:

Control Panel
Phone and Modems

Then switch off and Remove the actual modem card
Then reboot without any modem
Finally, switch off again, insert the modem... keep everything crossed,
Pray... and hope xp finds it ok.

In any event, it is quite likely the modem is not a Toshiba one.
If not, look on the manufacturers site for it's PCMCIA modem

Thanks. The modem is built in however. Is it possible to still remove it. In looking at it I don't see how. Thanks though.
