Can't configure what "closing lid" & power button does - Samsung N220Plus Netbook

Hello everyone, I recently received a Samsung N220Plus netbook, with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. While tweaking around, I noticed that the options for configuring what "closing the laptop lid" and power button does are greyed out.

I've googled for the issue, and unfortunately could not find any answers. I've tried registry fixes, software settings, disabling power management from BIOS, uninstalling Samsung power management software, etc. and nothing is working.

Is this a limitation of Windows 7 Home Premium? Or a limitation of the netbook? Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

It is not a Windows 7 limitation. That usually comes from OEM installed software. Looks like you have tried that. How about checking the Samsung manual?

I suspect it is a limitation of the netbook.

It may be that Samsung has their own software that takes over functionality, kind of like how some WiFi adapter software disables the built-in Windows Wireless Zero Config.

Zap, I've already uninstalled all Samsung software as well as disabled any auto power management from BIOS, and still nada.

Uninstalling the Samsung software may be a mistake. In laptops. that is usually where those controls are vested. That is because they are often OEM based. My Lenovos have that feature in the Lenovo "Toolbox." (I always set it to do nothing when the lid is closed.) Again, Netbooks do not have all the features of notebooks because low cost is the objective.

The weird thing is, the only 2 software in relation to "power management" were:

1. option to be able to charge devices via USB in Sleep mode.
2. a "battery saver" feature that only charges the battery to 80%.

So maybe I'm OK here? If not I can still restore the uninstalled software via Samsung Restore.

I have a Samsung Netbook which had the same problem. Many of the power options for my netbook were grayed out, so I was unable to set them. For instance everytime I closed the lid of the netbook it went to sleep so I was unable to access it over the network. I tried every possible solution that I found by googling the problem but nothing helped until I started looking into permission for power management.
I used the powercfg program to reset the write permissions for each particular setting that I needed to change and it then become available (not grayed out from within Windows interface).

Run the following commands from a command prompt.

For instance the following command created write permissions for built-in users for the lid action (LIDACTION) on a notebook:
powercfg -setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_BUTTONS LIDACTION 0 O:BAG:SYD(A;CI;KRKW;;;BU)(A;CI;KR;;;BA)(A;CI;KA;;;SY)(A;CI;KA;;;CO)

This command gets the current permission for the lid action:
powercfg -getsecuritydescriptor LIDACTION

You may have to be logged into Windows as an Administrator before you can use this program.

I have the same problem! It's annoying.

I can't get the command to work!? For starters I found an extra "space" in the command. But then it tells me invalid parameter?

Apparently command prompt doesn't do smiley faces! Here it is again but with spaces were the smiley faces were:

I just bought a Samsung QX410 and I had the same problem. It turns out that one of Samsung's preloaded programs, Faststart, which as the name suggests allows for quicker start times from Sleep, is the culprit. Run this program and turn off the option. You should be able to adjust the power button and lid closing options now.

Yes, I know how annoying that is when I just want to carry it across the room and not have it go to sleep!

Just got off the phone with Samsung. The issue for the power options / "what happens when closing lid" where the options are grayed out can be fixed by disabling "Fast Start" (simply type "Fast Start" in the run window).

After setting the option to "Do Nothing" when closing lid (when connected to power supply) should stop the laptop going to sleep, it is likely a good idea to leave this to go into sleep mode when on battery.

I have always set my laptops to do nothing when the lid is closed. But, do this with care - not good to go off and leave it that way for an extended period of time. That is because a lot of the cooling air needed by the laptop when ON, comes through the keyboard. With the lid closed, that fresh air is cut off.

The solution to this is to disable a peice of samsung software.

Go to start and in search programs and files type Fast

This will open samsumg fast start. Press off

Apply then ok.

Now you will be able to go into wi dows power settings and change what the lid does.
