Can't change Win XP Pro serial number.

Hi all,
I'm working on a machine that I'm trying to change the Win XP Pro serial number on. When I go throught the process outlined at microsoft which is the same as this one:

I get the screen that says "windows is already activated".

Any suggestions?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but...

This sounds like the problem I have seen on PC's that have failed validation, and afterwards the CD Key cannot be changed IAW many prescribed methods. I had to clean format with a VALID CD Key.
