If I try to change it from 640x480x16, the program locks. Windows 2000, using the latest UT patch.

Um......what are your system specs? What kinda video card?
You might also check the epic technology page and see if there's a patch or a fix for the problem. :)

Dumb question, but do you have the latest versions of your video driver and directx?

DirectX 8.1, 1900+, 128MB GeForce 4.

What, don't I have enough horsepower? ;)

You might want to check out Infogrames Support FAQ for UT.

"The game crashes in Direct3D mode either during launch or when switching resolutions in the video preferences menu."

First re-install DirectX 7 from your game CD, or the latest version available from Microsoft. DirectX is required for Direct3D mode to work. Then, update your video card drivers to the latest versions available from the manufacturer, or the latest reference drivers available from the card's chip manufacturer. Reference drivers tend to work best on 3dfx and Riva TNT/TNT2 cards as the manufacturer's versions don't always comply fully with Direct3D standards.

Didn't help. I'm running the Nvidia 30.82s and Direct X 8.1.

I have the same problem, I use Win 2K, Geforce 4 (any drivers, makes no difference) and it locks, I've found the best :( way to do it is through editing the ini file that has the graphics details set in it (UnrealTournament.ini)

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=1280
WindowedViewportY=960
WindowedColorBits=32
FullscreenViewportX=1024
FullscreenViewportY=768
FullscreenColorBits=16

Just change the above things for the resolution/depth you want in windowed and fullscreen mode and you should be fine (just make sure you go for the standard numbers :))
