Cant Change Permissions for my Hard Drives

I am trying to disable indexing on one of my hard drives...if i uncheck it and press apply it says I do not have permission to do this (I am the only user setup on this computer)...when i try to change permissions it wont let me do that either...what is going on here

Since I am the only user that I setup when installing Windows shouldn't I automatically be the admin and have permission for everything?

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit Edition

Edit: On a seperate issue one of the gadgets running on the sidebar of my desktop is a cpu meter...its the one that shows core 1 and 2 usage and memory usage...sometimes when im not even doing anything it shows the percentages going up high and my Raptor is going crazy..Ive only seen this happen once or twice but just wondering what could be causing it...What background services take up this much usage?

To respond to your first issue, you not only need to take permission of that drive, you will need to take 'ownership' of it. This should be in advanced properties somewhere. I'm 3 weeks into Vista so I'm not able to tell you right off the top of my head where this advanced setting can be found.

The CPU monitors for the sidebar are actually crap, and sometimes take up resources themselves. If you search online for other available CPU meters there is bound to be something a bit more accurate and efficient.

rt click the drive, go to "sharing and security" and click on the security tab. the advanced button is on the bottom right. in there, go to the ownership tab and select the "administrators" group for ownership. you could do it to your own account or the administrator, but after having a single account own my old servers HDD and the account getting deleted when I demoted it, ive learned that you need to have it on the group.
