Can't change file name

This just started happening after reinstall. On .jpg or .avi .wmv files, I get an error that reads

"If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?"

I DID use my friend Google, and I did as advised and disabled 'hide filename extensions' (tools > folder options > view TAB > advanced settings)

That didn't work. Any other options for me to try?

What are your trying to change? The filename? The file extension?

The message you got applies only to file extensions, i.e., the type of file. Those cannot be changed unless a conversion process takes place.

If all your want to change is the filename to the left of the dot - you can ignore that message.

You can change file extensions (the characters to the right of the "."), but then apps won't recognize them. There are rare times that this is useful.

My guess is that when you go to rename files you are clearing the entire file name in preparation to write a new name. Just leave the extension intact and highlight the characters to the left of the "." and type a new name.

Yes...all I want to do is change the file NAME not the extension or type of file.

I will try that last part, because I AM clearing everything then typing over it.

You can also set your file settings to not show extensions of known file types. Then the only time you could see (and type over) the extension would be of 'unknown' file types. (I.e. not associated with a program)

And that is why you are getting the message. Un-highlight the file extension and type in the desired name. Or - type in the whole name and include the same file extension.
