Can't change colors, resolution,etc

I just finished installing my DDR memory on my PC this morning, and everything went well, until I went into the BIOS. It seemed fine, but several of the letters were corrupted, or they looked weird. Then after installing XP, I can't change my color depth or my resolution or else the monitor will go BLACK and the computer will freeze. I don't understand this problem, and its really getting on my nerves. Is it because the video card is dead?
 
So you didn't have any problems until you installed the new stick of RAM? If so it sounds likely that it's faulty.
