Can't burn MP3s to DVD-Rs?

I have a DVD-ROM drive in my PC that I haven't really used since I built it. Main reason I got it was because it was so cheap. I burned one movie just to test it out, but I haven't used it for burning since.

Anyway I have all of my CD's burned into MP3s, since they total over 2 GIGs there is no way I can put these MP3s on a regular CD-R. I was hoping to be able to burn all of these MP3s on a DVD-ROM disc instead

However, for some reason when I try to copy my MP3's to the DVD (chose the "Make Data" disc in the software). The program kicks an error saying I am using the wrong format of disc and ejects my disc. I have verified my disc was blank because I just opened it. Are DVD-Rs only to be used for movies? This doesn't make much sense because even some games are on DVD-ROM, and I have heard about people being able to back up files on a DVD-R disc.

The software I am using is Nero (came with the drive). Eventhough I choose "Make data CD" Could it still be thinking I am trying to make an audio CD since all my files I am burning are MP3s? If so, could I possibly "trick it" by putting a non-music file in the data list?

just use the built in xp burner. drag the mp3 files to your burner in an explorer window let it do the burning.

This is the best bet to check if it is the software. They probably packaged an old version of Nero with the drive that is causing the errors.

Agreed, but it should work if it was bundled. Download the latest version of Nero and try again. Also, did you try a different disk? You could have a defective disk.

Assuming you are using a version6 oem of nero, when you open the smartstart program be sure you have dvd selected from the dropdown menu at the top center.

That may or may not be it, but it's a quick thing to check.

I used Nero 7 to burn 3gb of music to a DVD just last week, didn't encounter any problems. I used the "Make Audio DVD" option.
