I've tried using both Nero and CDBurnerXP. Both reject the CD when I try to burn by telling me there is no disc. I can still play music CDs though.

Are you using the latest firmware for your burner? How old is the burner?

The burner is about 3 years old. I don't know if it is the latest firmware or not. I tried multiple CD-Rs. I am able to burn DVDs. It use to work with CD-Rs. I'm not sure why it stopped working.

Check if you can read a normal CD. That will confirm if anything is wrong with your CD reader.

If you can, try another brand of CDR. If that doesn't work, it must mean that the CD-writer functionality of your drive is broken.

Lets just hope for the best !

Usually burners start having problems after 2 years of using. This could be a case of burned CD laser. Perhaps you could try some different brands of CD-R's and check (if you have not done that already that is). Maybe it's time to buy a new burner.

Btw, check on the newest firmware for your burner if you could.

Agree with Sam25. Such burners have two lasers, one for CDs and the other for DVDs. It is possible that the CD laser is broken, or possibly has a dirty lens. Have you tried running a cleaning disk?

Firmware could also be related - however, that usually does not affect detection of a standard quality disk of a type that existed when your burner was new.

Since it can read commercial CDs, lt seems to point to the CD burn laser.

Maybe it's time to start the economic recovery and get a new one for Christmas? ")

I have this problem too, and my Windows XP machine is probably a little over a year old now.

It won't allow me to burn DVD's, saying that the drive is empty, and it will only accept a certain brand of CD's that I have. I suspect that it will also accept DVD's, just the right brand. Why this is though I have no idea....again, it is a pretty new machine.

I've also read about certain Samsung burners which accept only a certain brand of DVD's, I wonder why though? Anyone who can explain this, why some burners end up being so picky?

I ran into something similar a year ago or so, my drive stopped reading/writing cd's, DVD's were fine. Turns out the CD laser was shot, replaced the drive, problem solved.

It is possible dust is on the sensor, like someone mentioned above. In that case, try getting a can of air and use the nozzle extension and blow that puppy out. Something to try before you go out and buy a new one.

Instead of stating it as bs, why don't you go on Google and search it yourself. I too have had Samsung burners which have worked fine for me. That does not mean that there have not been some rare cases of the burners being picky. So, stop with your stupid "I have never had a problem" thing and try to understand that someone might have a problem cropping up.
