I installed DVD burner (NEC ND-2500A) to go with my Lite-On (LTR-32123S) CD Burner. (They are on seperate IDE Channels, both as master.) After upgrading my Nero 5 to Nero 6, I can't burn CDs (anymore) or DVDs. I was able to burn CDs without problems with Nero 5. I uninstalled Nero 5 prior to installing Nero 6 and also used Nero's driver and registry clean utilities. To validate a proper installation, I uninstalled and re-installed Nero 6. Still wont burn either. I also tried re-installing Nero 5, it burned CDs without problems. (I'm burning at 8X, since I was given some old CD-R media. Nero 6 also failed with newer CD-R media as well.) Can anyone help me with this problem?
Nero log shows this -

go to your device drivers, and under controller make sure you're running in dma mode rather than pio mode. maybe it got switched when u installed the software in for some reason

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

i've found this to be quite true for nero. something always breaks with each update - so i just stopped updating

well, i put in my drive, booted up, installed nero 6 and it wouldn't work.

then i rebooted and installed all the windows updates that were sitting idle in my taskbar. it works now, probably just needed that reboot.

i never got any msgbox to tell me to reboot either, that is why i figured i didn't have to.

are you using the latest version of nero & if so is your dvd burner seen as a recorder under tools>recorders?

That 'viadsk.sys' driver looks mighty suspicious. Did you install the Via IDE drivers, or the entire 4-in-1 package recently? I have an MSI KT4V-L mobo, and after installing the Via IDE drivers, I had no end of problems with my CD-ROMs, both burning and even reading some disks.

Unless you happen to have a Via 686B southbridge, I highly recommended NOT installing Via IDE drivers, use the default MS ones provided in the OS instead.

It's also ancient - 10/9/2001? Looks like a standard XP in-box driver. If it's a Via MB, try downloading Via's 4-in-1 drivers (4.51 is the latest, IIRC) from www.viatech.com and see if that does anything for you.

Also, do all Windows updates.

Does XP even ship with a Via IDE driver? I don't think so, at least my initial WinXP install didn't show one. It should show "Provider: Microsoft" on the driver's property pages, and I'm pretty sure it would show PCIIDE.SYS or ATAPI.SYS or DISK.SYS or something, not something with Via in the name. I'll have to double-check my WinXP installation on this machine when I reboot.

I'll admit that the 5.0.2195.x version stamp does look like an MS in-the-box driver though.

I do know from personal experience though, that installing the Via IDE drivers *will* tend to cause the issue noticed by the OP, so it seemed reasonable that they might be the problem.

Ok, I just checked the installation files from the Via 4-in-1 4.51v, the IDE drivers are VIAIDEXP.INF and VIAIDEXP.SYS, those don't match. But on a hunch, I checked something else, and indeed, the files from 'IDE_MPD3014.zip' do match, VIAIDE.SYS, with a version stamp of 5.0.2195.3014. And in fact, those are the exact drivers that I had problems with my CD burning.

So to the OP: Uninstall, or better, roll-back (if using XP), your Via IDE Controller drivers to the standard MS ones, and then Uninstall your CD-ROMs and burners, and let Windows re-detect and re-install them using the MS drivers, and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Edit: Just noticed that the OP was from 2004-06-07, I'm going to PM him a link to this thread to make sure he sees it. N/m, his PM is disabled. Hope he sees this.
