I am having a problem burning audio cds on windows xp. I can burn data cds just fine but when i try to burn a audio cd it just starts writing then stops. I have tried using about 3 different programs. Feurio, Windows Media Player, and Nero. I have a plextor plexwriter 8/4/32. Can anybody help??

The problem stated sounds like it occurs immediately after you have started to record (not a few minutes into the recording).

1)
There is an update on MS web site for this problem. DL it and see if it helps. If it does not help, see part 2.

2)
Is the software you are using caching the data to a temp directory first?
Have you defragmented your HDD recently?
Have you updated the firmware on your cdrw lately? (If not, do not update firmware)

Make sure that you have the latest version of Nero (5.5.5.1). Older versions of Nero seem to have problems with Win XP.

I also suggest that you do a "windows update" from your control panel. Make sure you check off the box that says "CD-Burner update". Lots of other people are having the same problem.

Hope this helps.

Here's one possible solution (it worked for me): Found out by trial and error that XP didn't like DMA transfer mode for my Plextor 12/10/32 - burns stopped part way through the process. XP had set the transfer mode on my drive to DMA by default, even though the drive doesn't support it (according to Plextor, the drive is PIO Mode 4). I set the transfer mode on the drive to PIO, and all burning problems ceased without any noticeable loss in drive performance.

To change the transfer mode, go into Device Manager, select the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, select the channel the writer is on (primary or secondary), select the drive number of your writer (0 or 1), then change transfer mode to PIO Only. reboot, and that should solve your problem.
