Hi guys! I recently built a computer for a good friend who was on a budget. I bought the LITE ON LTR-48246S Retail box for him since it has a great price/performance ratio.

Now, he has tried Roxio EZCD 5 Platinum with all the latest updates and also Nero 5.5.9.17. When he goes to make a data disc, it works fine. Even the dragging and dropping within WinXP's explorer windows works fine for data. When he attempts to make an audio disc, it usually errors out right away or just after a few hundred KB of data have been written.

The thing that boggles my mind is that I've built identical machines for a company with the same burner and also have used the burner in another build, but different motherboard and no one has reported any problems!

I've had him Update his ASPI Layer drivers as well, but no avail. He's tried 3 different media types including Sony, Imation, and a Memorex. (blech! :p)

Overall the system runs superb, fast, and stable. This is the only issue that has come up.

Below is the output failure message from Nero:

The scenario begs a couple of questions - it would appear that the CD reader drive can't translate audio data fast enough - or something gets in the way. Have you tried it at less than max speed? Also - in many cases, ECDC 5 and Nero cannot exist on the same machine without conflict. Use one or the other - but not both installed at the same time. Try this approach . . .

Copy the audio CD to the hard drive totally. Then create the audio CD from the hard drive cache directly w/o involving the other CD drive.

I can vouch for that. Made a bunch of coasters trying to burn music CD's. Finally uninstalled the Roxio software, and just used Nero, and everything worked fine. I'm not sure about Nero, but when you install Roxio and reboot, it has a program running in the background that detects when you insert a blank CD (and then it lauches the Roxio interface). I think this program was interfering with Nero's access to the CD-ROM. Not sure why Roxio wouldn't work for me. But it's easy enough to try just running one or the other.

I had EZCD5 and Nero installed at the same time for quite some time without any problems. I don't use either of them to do audio cds though. For Audio, I use Fuerio! which is made by the same people that make Nero. It's an audio only program that I just love. Possibly another reason I've never had a problem is that I always use the option to make a temp image on my hdd first, then burn. It takes a little longer, but it always works.

I too have used Nero and Roxio together without any hitches. He originally put EZCD 5 on there, but that didn't work so I had him try out Nero. No avail.

It's simply MP3 files converted to WAV on his HDD to burn on a disc to play in his car. Simple as that. It's not a direct audio disc to CD-R.

I will have him try out 12x or 16x write speed.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming, gang! :)

Have you checked what media he is using? It had better be properly rated for whatever speed the drive is... I have a Lite-ON LTR, and it seems really picky about good media. If I use generic media, it fails all the time on Audio Cds, but if I use brand names, it works 100%.

He's tried 3 different media types including Sony, Imation, and a Memorex. (blech! )

Good point. I have not asked him what speeds his discs were rated for. I know he uses an 8x burner in a Compaq at school.

Ok, he's tried burning at 8x and 16x, no avail. It doesn't even try to write data. It just immediately errors out and says a buffer underrun. :(

I had him update to the latest firmware as well, but no luck. :|

Is it possible the drive is bad? Aren't audio and data CDs written in two different modes?

I think I see a problem.

Tell him to move the Asus drive over to the WD800JB's chain, because having the source and the destination drive on the same chain is suicide because IDE can't interleave properly. I learned that the hardway, after making half a dozen coasters.

If that fails, I would try uninstalling all of the CD burning programs on the computer, and just installing Nero.

If that fails, then I would probably try music match Jukebox and see if that can burn an Audio CD properly.

I sympathize with you. Very much. :(

Honestly, I've never had any problems with IDE source and destination drives on the same chain. Besides, I'd have to do some re-arranging of the HDD and optical drives to do so. :p

I found out that the slave connector on the IDE cable was bad...before moving the Asus CDROM to the WD HDD chain, I tried the Lite-On CDRW by itself on the same cable, but using the master connector. Sure enough, it worked!

I swapped out the bad IDE cable and put in a different one. All is well! I can do audio CD to blank to copy without problems, I can burn WAV files without problems, and data discs still work. ;)

Why I couldn't burn an audio disc is beyond me...all I know is my client is happy and a lot of stress has been taken off my shoulders.

I would like to thank everyone for their input and suggestions to help me through this.
