Can't burn as well with win2k

I had NT4 first and it would burn flawlessly at 6x while I was playing games or whatever. I put on win2k and now I can barely ever get through a complete burn. I have to reboot my computer each time I want to burn, even then, sometimes it doensn't work. I am using Adeptec EZ CD version 3.5 and Nero 5.
Same results with both. I have a SMart anf Friendly TurboWriter CDRW. PLease help! Offer any suggestions!
