Can't burn above 16x?

Ok, the VPR Matrix I bought came with an NEC 40x16x48x burner. But when burning CDs with Nero or CloneCD, I can only burn at up to 16x

Is there a BIOS update I need or something?

Check and see if DMA is on for that drive.

According to device manager, I'm using Ultra DMA Mode 2 on the channel.

Is it on the same IDE channel as the drive your getting data from?

I just thought of something, are you using high speed media? Or are you using 16x media?

You likely have a drive utilizing SMART-Burn and it is reading the 16X and locking the speed. Try using Nero and disabling SMART-Burn, then try to burn at a higher speed. Be sure to check your recorded discs for errors though.
