my memorex 1622 cd-rw is not working in win2k. i don't know if it is a software problem or a hardware problem.

it can read cd-rs perfectly fine. however if i pop in a blank cd-r (i've tried cheap generic brand, memorex brand and memorex cd-rw) and choose 'cd properties', the program stops responding until i pull the cd out. once i do, i see adaptec say 'media unreadable'. i know memorex media works with this burner since it IS a memorex and i've used memorex media before.

i thought it was adaptec problem, so i reinstalled v4.02 twice. then i tried v3.5c but same result. blank media is unreadable and freezes program.

then i thought it was due to services i turned off, so i enalbed anything that looked like it had to do with cd-roms (removeable storage, logical drives and something else). no luck.

then i rt clicked my cmputer and chose 'manage' under removeable drives, i added the media CD-RW and CD-R. no luck. then i choose 'fast inventory' and checked 'perform full inventory on mount failure' no luck again.

so i figure it might be an O/C problem. so i bumped the PCI bus back to normal. no luck. set 'autodetect' all IDE devices in BIOS. no luck.

looked for a firmware update, but there was none. this cd-rw is about 2+ years old. only 2x write and 6x read. it was working fine before i upgraded to win2k. i think i will try to burn stuff on a win98 computer tomorrow to see if it works there.

any ideas?

thanks.

Sounds like your drive might have taken a dump on you. How often did you burn with it back when you were still using Win98? You might find yourself shopping for a new drive soon....

BTW, using Memorex media isn't always a guarantee that it will work with a Memorex drive. As a general rule of thumb, the brand of media is almost meaningless. It's all about the factory the media was made in.

Your drive has issues. I had this drive about a year ago, mess with the DMA in device man. If it's checked un check it or check it if it's not.

You can get 4x write drives for under $100 (or 12x under $150 hehe)
Sell that drive to a win 9x Beginner and get a new drive that will play nice in 2k.

thanks for the links.

but can anyone get this burner to burn under win2k.

just reformatted (i was bored. for some reason win2k only loads with about 46 megs RAM this time - same setup as before) and am going to try to burn again tomorrow.
