Can't browse local network with ME

I have a fair amount of experience with small networks but occasionally have problems when building a new machine. I just built a low end machine from spare parts and installed Windows ME because I have a license. I have everything working and it is talking to the internet through my router. I cannot browse my local network though. I can ping the other machines but when I attempt to browse it I get an error mesage that says windows is unable to browse the network. I have the local workgroup named Home as are my other machines. I made sure that I logged into the machine rather than just starting without logging in. I cannot think of anything else to check so if a networking expert here has an idea, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
