i am running a wi-fi network at home. i am using an smc 7004awbr router with 3 pc's. the two pc's running win98 are working fine. however, the pc running win-xp cannot browse the internet. the signal strength is fine as is the link quality. the two pc's running win98 are using orinoco wireless cards, while the win-xp box is using the smc 2662w usb client. i can ping the router, but cannot ping www.yahoo.com (for example). this win-xp pc has been working fine for over a year, but this morning i got the lame idea to run the "set-up a network" wizard because i thought i had the wrong workgroup name on the win-xp computer. now i can't browse the internet (which i need to do for work). i was on the phone all day with smc tech support to no avail. any thoughts? thank you very much in advance.

I doubt that SMC can help you. it is probably a WinXP problem.

Running the Wizard when the system is already configured most of the time will result in additional trouble.

Go over your WinXP settings manually.

To gain knowledge read the content of the following links:

Windows XP Home Networking Guide

If you have WinXP pro it is a similar install.

When this is done take care of the User Permission, and Sharing.

=======================================================

For the propose of the initial setting, disable all software Firewall (including WinXP native
ICF); disable any active Virus scan or any other utility that might intercept Network Traffic.

Remove NIC driver from device manager, shut down, take out the NIC, boot once more then shut down, reinstall NIC and then setup your network options. I think that would do it.

worked!! thanks so much for everyone's help. i'm so inspired that i will now join forums where i can be of help to others. now on to problem #2: on my 3 pc network, the two win98 machines see and share everything. however, the win-xp machine cannot see or share with the others. the others can see the win-xp pc but cannot "access" it. the win-xp does share the internet connection. any thoughts?
