This MAY be an 'SP2 Problem', since it's the first time I've tried to boot into Safe Mode since installing SP2.
Installation is XP Home Edition set up to automatically boot as owner/single user, with no administrator/user accounts or passwords. This is a fresh XP install with SP2 and all current updates.
On startup/restart the system properly recognizes the F8 Key and displays the usual menu choices, with the usual count-down timer. Regardless of Safe Mode selected ( Safe, Safe w/internet, etc.), the menu just loops back - no Safe Mode selection is accepted. If I just let the menu timer time-out, XP boots normaly.
The system would boot to Safe Mode(s) as XP+SP1 (pre-SP2). I don't know if this problem is limited to my specific system - or perhaps an SP2 problem.
This is not a truly critical problem, since my OS partition is imaged regularly - just an annoyance.
Any suggested fixes?
Thanks for your help!
