Hi all,

My system has encountered a problem saying that the himem.sys file is missing and that I could only enter Windows under safe mode.
According to the solution given by Microsoft, I try to start my computer with CD-ROM support with the startup disk....however, after I've chosen ".....with CD-ROM support", it seems that it has read the floppy startup disk but can't read the CD-ROM....
and stay there with a flashing _ , anyone knows how to fix this?
How could I extract the himem.sys file from Win98 CD-ROM back to the system?

Thanks very much
Carmen

Since you can boot into safe mode, you should be able to make a new boot disk by going to the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and clicking on the tab for making a startup disk. Use this disk to boot your PC and then follow the instructions you have from Microsoft.

Is your optical drive an IDE drive? SCSI? Is it detected by the motherboard at POST screen? If so download the Win98se boot disk from bootdisk.com, it will give CD-ROM support.

Win98 safe mode does not allow detection of the Cd-rom drives. If you are using a Windows boot floppy and still can't detect the CD-rom, then check your cables or the drive itself, something is not working. Try a different CD-rom drive or replacing the IDE ribbon.
